The Scouts headed off for the now annual trip to Thriftwood to take part in the Pedal Car Olympics.

We suffered the normal moaning from the Scouts on the way up “we’ve got to put the tents up when we get there”, “I hate putting up tents in the dark!” etc, etc. However upon arrival it appeared the tent fairy had been as all the tents were up and waiting for them. Turns out the tent fairies were Point 5 & Gadget who went to site Friday morning, put up the tents, made it back home in time for a cuppa before heading back to Thriftwood with the Scouts. It’s so much easier when the tents are up when the Scouts arrive, definitely doing it that way in future.

Once we had eaten and the Scouts allocated their tents it was time for an early night before the racing began Saturday morning. We were surprised at how well the ground was holding up considering the amount of rain we had had recently. This was great for 3 of our teams as they would be doing the Endurance Race as the first events in the morning. Not so great for Team Delta who had it half way through Sunday.

The racing got under way Saturday morning. For those that don’t know there are 9 different events that the Scouts take part in over the weekend. We had a few short showers during the day but the rain held off. That was until the days events finished at 3:30 then all hell let loose. The wind started blowing and we had very heavy rain for hours.

The rain did ease for a while whilst the Scouts went and sampled the evenings activities, various inflatables and a silent disco. Gadget and Carl managed to get a fire going on the soaking wet ground with wet wood, it kept us warm until it was time for bed.  It rained all night but we were greeted by the sun on Sunday morning. By now the site was just mud, the grass that had greeted us Friday was gone. The campfire circle at Thriftwood was under 2 feet of water!

This year we took 16 Scouts (4 teams of 4) and for 7 of them it was the first time they had taken part in the event.

So were did we come?

Ned took an individual placing for joint 2nd in the Triathlon.

Team Alpha – Oliver, Presley, Ben & Olivia – 4th place

Team Bravo – Niamh, Katie, Hayley & Abigail – 37th place

Team Charlie – Ned, Tobin, Taylor & Jack – 23rd place

Team Delta – Ed, Oliver, Becky & Ryan – 43rd

Well done all of you, you did us proud and had a simile on your face even when you finished the Endurance!

A huge thank you to Colin and the crew at Thriftwood for another brilliant weekend.

A massive thank you to those parents that took a tent home to dry and clean for us.

Roll on 2017!
