What a fantastic week we had. On Saturday morning, far too early for the Scout leaders, 20 cubs and 5 leaders set off for Cubjam 2016. A speedy journey saw us arrive nice and early to set our site up for the week along with over 1000 other young people and leaders.
After a well earned tea we set off for the opening ceremony where the cubs sang and danced until it was dark before settling down for the first night.
Sunday morning saw us getting ready for archery when suddenly, an announcement, Bear Grylls was on site!! Much excitement Alexandra was picked along with Harry for a brief one to one during which Alexandra presented him with a scarf and hat and Harry had his hat stolen by the great man. His hat was later returned unsigned but what an experience for him. We all headed down to the main square to try and meet him again and were fortunate for a number to get close enough to have their hats signed, Penny was speechless as she met her hero! Then on to arc hey where a number war able to hit the bullseye.
Next came the talent show heats where the cubs performed to a high standard both as a whole group and also as a group of 4(Penny, Chaya, Alexandra and Daniella). The afternoon saw us watching the Colonel Custard Magic Show, he was great and Harry was lucky enough to be part of the act.
Great excitement at tea time when we learnt the whole cub group number had made it to the semi-finals the next day!!1
Monday saw the cubs climbing, al did very well with some overcoming some very individual fears. They all helped with the building of the 100 year lego cake and made lego wiggles.
The cubs also had a go on a formula one simulator racing against each other. They had some free time where there was an opportunity to spend she money with most opting for ice cream, sweets and fizzy drinks!
The talent show semi finals were great fun with the cubs putting on their best performance possible, the whole crowd was dancing and singing along. Sadly the judges didn’t put us though to the final but they are all winners in our eyes.
Tuesday was a wet day but spirits war not dampened. Our first activity was the caving bus, a first for most, they loved it and most went back for a second go. We then moved on to a drumming and percussion session which was fun and dry! The afternoon saw us retreat to the craft tent before embarking on its a knockout. This was a hit with all, giant inflatables, running, jumping, competing and shouting, what more could a cub want.
The cubs all then had a shower so for a moment they were clean, if only briefly.
Wednesday was our day out at Whipsnade zoo and again despite the rain fun was had by all. The variety of animals was vast including giraffes (where the cubs renewed their promise), monkeys, lions (where Willow and Poppy had a close encounter), penguins, butterflies and a sloth bear. Teatime saw a McDonalds treat along with a McFlurrie before they set off exploring around site again. There was all sorts to do each night including films, bingo, scavenger hunts and craft.
Thursday was carnival day and after a morning of free time and activities that included zorbing, bungee trampoline, grass sledging and laser tag (these had been available all week), it was carnival time. Costumes were donned including Kaa’s inflatable horse before the whole of Deadwood set off shouting at the top of our voices. At this point Steve Backshall made an appearance and we were again lucky enough to get a few hats signed during his visit. The carnival parade finished and everyone sat down to a picnic before embarking on an evening of fairground rides. Poppy, Willow and Jacob dragged Kaa on to the Waltzer but everyone had great evening.
Sadly Friday saw the closing ceremony with the announcement that the theme for 2019 is ‘Around the World’ so all you Beavers out there who will be cubs in 2019 thats what you have to look forward to.
Throughout the week the cubs have been enthusiastic and met every challenge head on, along with the support of our fantastic leaders, lifelong memories have been made.
A special congratulations go out to Victoria, Lauren, Grace, Olivia and Daniella who won the prize for the best tent and to Jacob and Victoria who were cubs of camp.
Here’s looking forward to 2019 where more memories will be made. Thanks to all the parents for your lovely comments and support during the week, enjoy the washing!!
