14th Broadstairs had the honour of being the first in Thanet to receive the International Peace Light on Wednesday 18th December.

This light is originally lit from the ‘Eternal flame’ at the nativity grotto in Bethlehem. The light is then flown to Austria, who originated the idea in 1986 as a charity relief mission for children. Once in Austria representatives from around the world attend a service and then carry the light back to their own countries via a lantern lit from the same flame.

The UK first became involved in the mid 1990’s when a scouter organised, along with the Deep Sea Scouts, Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and the co-operation of P and O Ferries to bring the flame to the UK via the port of Dover.

With the help of some of our groups Grandparents we were able to receive the Peace Light after they accepted it for us at a service in Dover.

We lit our own lantern from the Peace Light whilst repeating the message:

‘We gladly receive the Light as a sign of our willingness to be channels of Peace by our words and actions”

Many thanks to all who helped organise this and to all the group members who turned out on a windy night.

It was an apt and indeed lovely way to end the term.

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all
